President Joe Biden addressed the vaccination effort Thursday night in his prime-time speech and hinted the nation may be seeing a more normal reality sooner than thought.
Biden is hopeful that life could be somewhere near normal by the Fourth of July. He elaborated that this reality will only be possible if all Americans get vaccinated.
"By July the Fourth, there's a good chance you, your families and friends will be able to get together in their backyard or in your neighborhood and have a cookout or a barbecue and celebrate Independence Day," Biden said Thursday.
Biden advised that by May 1, all American adults should be eligible to sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine. He clarified that this deadline doesn't mean one will be vaccinated by then, but starting in the beginning of May, one should be able to schedule an appointment.
Here in New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced 14 community-based pop-up vaccination sites will be coming online this week. These new sites will likely end up vaccinating more than 4,000 New Yorkers this week.
Earlier this week, Cuomo called on houses of worship to partner with the state to reach Black and brown communities to focus on the vulnerable populations.
Vaccination sites like the one at Church of the Mediator in Kingsbridge that opened Friday are popping up all over New York. These smaller pop-ups are a little less overwhelming compared to the large mass vaccination sites.
Betsy Fogarty has been helping her neighbors get their vaccine. She herself got the shot and is looking forward to a hug from her daughter.
"It's going to be like a rebirth," Fogarty said.
