State lawmakers on Thursday approved changes to the state's involuntary commitment laws.
Involuntary commitment allows a person with untreated mental health issues to be held in a hospital against their will if their condition poses a danger to themselves or others.
Mayor Eric Adams says the new rules will help tackle the mental health crisis in the city.
The change also gives hospitals more clarity in figuring out exactly who needs help.
Adams also acknowledged the alterations will prevent attacks committed by people struggling with a mental illness.
