A global technology outage has led to significant travel disruptions, with over tens of thousands of flights delayed across the country according to FlightAware.
While the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's
buses and subways seem to be spared, the same cannot be said for air travel. Both JFK and LaGuardia Airports are reporting hundreds of delays and dozens of cancellations.
The numbers continued to climb Friday afternoon as airlines struggled to restore operations.
Delta, United and American Airlines are offering travel waivers to passengers impacted by the situation. However, the volume of inquiries has overwhelmed customer service lines.
As of noon, Delta Airlines reported a 10.5-hour wait to speak with a representative. Both Delta and United are advising customers to call back at a later time unless they are traveling in the next 72 hours.
Travelers are encouraged to manage their reservations online if possible. The Port Authority has advised New Yorkers traveling today to verify their flight status before heading to the airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration says delays and ground stops are expected to persist at airports nationwide until the technology issue is fully resolved.
