This month marks two years that NYC Health + Hospitals has been serving plant-based meals, in partnership with Sodexo, to patients at its 11 hospitals citywide.
To celebrate, the health system hosted an event at its Culinary Center in Flatbush providing attendees a taste of items on the menu.
"This is going to give food that actually tastes good that you will want to continue to eat because it tastes good and its good for you," said Dr. Mitchell Katz/NYC Health + Hospitals president and CEO.
Scientific research shows plant-based eating patterns can lead to lower risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, obesity and certain types of cancer.
In addition to health benefits, the hospital system has been about to reduce carbon emissions by 36%, and save 59 cents per meal.
To date, more than 1.2 million meals have been served throughout the hospital system.
