Data from New York's health officials show a significant drop in monkeypox cases over the past few weeks.

The average daily number of new monkeypox cases detected over a seven-day period was 72 about a month ago.

That number dropped to nine on Aug. 30, which is the latest data available.

Data from the New York Health and Mental Hygiene Department shows a clear downward trend since cases peaked in late July.

So far, Manhattan has the highest number of cases within the five boroughs with over 1,200 cases, followed by Brooklyn with 710 cases and the Bronx with 535 cases.

Since Friday, the city started opening up appointments for second doses of the monkeypox vaccine for eligible New Yorkers. The city also announced last week that sex workers are now eligible to get the vaccine.

City-run sites started accepting walk-ins for those who are getting their first dose since Friday.
