Mayor Adams provides briefing on Hurricane Fiona recovery efforts

The mayor has often referred to Puerto Rico as NYC's "sixth borough,” and reports say more than 700,000 people on the island are still without power.

New York City leaders returned to the States to give an update on recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, as well as Dominican Republic, in the wake of Hurricane Fiona.
Mayor Eric Adams held a briefing on his trips abroad, where he met with local elected officials to survey the damage left behind by Fiona.
The mayor has often referred to Puerto Rico as NYC's "sixth borough,” and reports say more than 700,000 people on the island are still without power.
Hurricane Fiona wreaked havoc across Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Turks & Caicos and other parts of the Caribbean.
Puerto Rico was especially hit hard, given that the island is still recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Maria destroyed the island’s power grid, which was still in the process of being fully rebuilt.
Winds as strong as 85 mph and flooding were seen in many of the southern parts of the island. Local leaders in NYC have said that one of the biggest issues now continues to be figuring out how to restore power to the island.
Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres and Bronx Councilman Rafael Salamanca Jr., along with Gov. Kathy Hochul and the mayor, were just a few of the elected officials who made trips to the island over the last few days.
President Joe Biden has promised to cover 100% of emergency costs within the first 30 days.
