New Yorkers rallied outside of Gov. Kathy Hochul's Manhattan office on Thursday to demand that she invest more of next year's state budget into the safety of communities throughout the city.

With just a little over a month left until the state's final budget is due, tenants, workers and homeless people want Hochul to put that money into alternative safety options to incarceration.

Organizers say Hochul should be protecting communities against arbitrary evictions and extending rental assistance and unemployment support, as well as mental health services and anti-violence programs.

"The governor is signaling that she wants to keep communities safe,” said one organizer. “We do too. But we know that this is the best way by putting resources in and investing in these programs and support that New Yorkers rely on and can access, that's how we're going to keep folks safe."

The final budget for 2024 is expected to be released April 1.
