In northern Manhattan, the Department of Transportation is introducing upgraded parking meters aimed at enhancing the parking experience across the city.

"The new technology that we are installing today allows those individuals not to go back to the car and bring that traditional receipt," said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

The introduction of Pay by Plate technology eliminates the need for drivers to place paper receipts on their dashboards. Instead, drivers can simply enter their license plate number on the upgraded meters and monitor their parking time through the Park NYC app.

"The new upgraded app will send the signal to a person's phone, reminding them they have a few minutes left," said Rodriguez.

Demonstrations of the new meters showcased their intuitive design, maintaining the familiarity of the old meters while incorporating multiple languages and contactless tap-and-go credit card payments. Currently, around 14,000 of these upgraded meters have been installed, with plans for full implementation across all boroughs, covering approximately 80,000 metered parking spaces.

"This is good for the environment, this is good for the small businesses because it will help to rotate parking spots, and it will be great for those who use it because it improves efficiency," said Rodriguez.

For individuals without smartphones to use the app, the option to request a receipt at the meters remains available. To learn more about the deployment schedule and how to utilize the upgraded meters, click here.
