New York City Housing Authority workers were out Saturday making sure buildings are equipped to handle the freezing cold temperatures.

NYCHA officials say they are closely watching almost 2,000 boilers, including 21 mobile boiler plants at sites that were impacted by Superstorm Sandy.

They say staff will be on 24-hour watch teams to monitor mobile boilers. 

NYCHA workers were also stopping by the apartments of elderly residents and other vulnerable people to make sure they are signed up for the emergency call system. 

With temperatures expected to drop into the single digits Saturday night, more than 100 heating technicians, plumbers, electricians and welders are on standby and residents are urged to alert NYCHA if there are any heating issues.
