Tenants in Sheepshead Bay are begging for the heat to be turned on in their apartments.
According to residents of the Nostrand Houses, the New York City Housing Authority failed to provide adequate heat as temperatures dropped over the weekend. Many resorted to turning on their stoves and using space heaters for warmth.
One resident says she ended up with the fire department at her home on Saturday because of a carbon monoxide leak caused by leaving her stove on. She says on Sunday, her space heater that was plugged into an extension cord almost caught on fire.
City law requires landlords to keep apartments at at least 68 degrees if the temperature outside drops below 55 during the day. Overnight, if the temperature goes below 40 degrees outside, it must be at least 55 in your home.
Officials encourage tenants to call 311 if their landlords aren't providing heat, and strongly warn against using stoves or space heaters as an alternative.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA about the heat at the Nostrand Houses, and it says it's looking into the situation. NYCHA insists it is following heat guidelines at all of its residences.
