NYCHA’s Mitchel Houses hit with nearly 20 violations before collapse

Records reveal the NYCHA complex has been plagued by safety and management issues for years.
According to the Department of Buildings, the Mitchel Houses racked up nearly 20 violations, including a stop-work order on renovations and more than $30,000 in fines after failing to file a required inspection on time last year.
Tenants say they’ve long warned about dangerous conditions. Several described strange and disruptive noises from the boiler system, which they claim NYCHA failed to address despite repeated calls.
“When the steam comes up, you can hear clanging—you can’t sleep…from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.,” tenant D. English said.
Another resident, Shakir King, added, “25 years it’s been neglected, that’s disgusting.”
Neighbors now fear nearby buildings could face the same risks.
“If this building was neglected like this, then all the other buildings in the area have been neglected the same,” King told News 12.
News 12 reached out to NYCHA for a statement.
A spokesperson for the agency wrote the following: “DOB has a record of this heating plant being inspected in June 2025. Prior open violations related to the boilers are non-safety related defects from 2023 that are at this time not believed to have contributed to this event and are not believed to have impacted the safe operation of this equipment. However, all records continue to be part of this investigation.”
