The 18-year-old woman killed in a crash that injured several others Friday morning in Brooklyn has been identified, and a driver is in custody.
Police say two cars collided at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Court Street around 3:30 a.m. Surveillance video revealed by police shows the fiery overnight crash and one of the drivers attempting to flee.
The footage shows the moment a black Mercedes Benz flew onto the sidewalk on Court Street after the collision. The vehicle quickly went up in flames as the 25-year-old driver exited. He's seen leading his passenger, a 24-year-old woman, away from the burning vehicle before disappearing.
The white Honda involved in the crash landed on the opposite side of the street in front of Trader Joe's. First responders raced to pull victims from the vehicle while firefighters hosed down the smoking black car.
Police say 18-year-old Shanti Joyner, who was inside the Honda, died as a result of the accident. The other occupants, a 32-year-old woman and 29-year-old man, were rushed to the hospital and are in stable condition.
The driver who tried to run off was taken into custody a few blocks from the crash. His passenger was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
Police say both the driver of the white Honda and the black Mercedes Benz have charges pending.
