Sources say the young child was on his way to summer camp on Eastern Parkway when he was struck by a van with passengers inside.
Police say around 8:40 a.m. the young boy was crossing the service road at Eastern Parkway and Albany Street when he was struck by a Nissan van with four passengers inside.
Police say none of the passengers were injured. The boy was rushed to Maimonides Hospital, where he is in critical condition.
Last month, an 8-year-old boy was hit-and-killed at the same intersection. Neighbors calling the street notoriously dangerous.
"They are speeding. They are not driving," said Debbie Hager, a local resident. "People are going 60, 70 mph," said a man who did not want to share his identity.
It's unclear if this driver was speeding, but residents say the road does lack speed cameras and signs indicating a school zone.
"I believe that they should put street bumps," said Hager.
The driver did stay on the scene and cooperated with police.
The Department of Transportation said in a statement, “Our thoughts are with the victim of this terrible crash. We are reviewing street design at this location.”
