Police say a 12-year-old student who was found with a gun at Conselyea Preparatory School in Williamsburg is facing weapons charges.
The Department of Education says extra safety measures will be in place at the school after the 12-year-old student was found with a gun on campus Monday.
Police responded to the building at 208 North Fifth St. around 10:30 a.m. and say the student had an unloaded firearm. No injuries were reported, and the weapon was safely recovered after other students alerted school staff.
Authorities say the student has been arrested on charges of criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds.
A spokesperson for the DOE said, "The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and weapons have absolutely no place in our schools. This item was quickly recovered after brave students raised a concern and all students and staff are safe."
In response to the incident, the DOE says additional school safety agents and mental health resources will be available for students and staff today and in the coming days.
Conselyea Prep shares the building with an elementary school, and some parents told News 12 they were concerned about how information was communicated after the gun was found.
Classes are continuing as scheduled.
