The NYPD says a 12-year-old student was found with an unloaded firearm inside a Williamsburg middle school Tuesday morning.
The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. at JHS 577, where responding officers recovered the weapon from the student.
No one was injured.
"I think there are drills being implemented in schools to tell them what to do in cases like a shooter in the school," said Daniela Rodas, a Williamsburg resident. "It’s really sad to hear that elementary and middle school kids have to go through this."
The Department of Education said weapons have “absolutely no place” in schools and commended the students who came forward and alerted staff.
Officials say additional security and mental health resources are being provided to support the school community.
Police say they are still questioning the student involved.
