A 16-year-old was stabbed in Kingsbridge Heights on Tuesday afternoon, according to the NYPD.
Police say the victim was approached by five unknown males at the intersection of West 195th Street and Jerome Avenue around 2:30 p.m. They say he was stabbed in the stomach with an unknown object.
According to police, the victim was a student at the nearby Walton High School and was likely walking home after school when the incident took place. Officials have yet to determine if this was a planned or random attack.
The victim was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he is currently in critical condition.
A representative from the NYC School Safety Coalition provided the following statement:
"We are saddened by this latest incident of youth violence. Today's stabbing of another teen traveling home from school is heartbreaking. Parents send their children to school expecting them to be safe and to return home safely. No parent should lose their children to bullets and knives. The ongoing youth violence epidemic is terrifying our children and families. We need safe corridors outside of schools. We call on Mayor Adams to bring back the School Safety Mobile Task Force Unit to patrol outside of schools. We call on parents and community leaders to join us in finding solutions to this youth crisis at our upcoming Youth and School Safety summit on Saturday, February 11. It takes a village to raise a child."
