A task force comprised of residents, police and the Brooklyn district attorney is cracking down on crime near local methadone clinics. Officials with the Interfaith Medical Clinic in Prospect Heights and Addiction Research and Treatment Program in Fort Greene have agreed to improve the behavior of their patients, teaming up with the district attorney and NYPD to deter drug use, drug sales and graffiti near their facilities. The system will allow for three offenses per person, with the first two resulting in a warning. A third offense puts patients at risk of losing welfare and other city benefits. Residents who live near the clinics say they hope the new rules will bring about safer neighborhoods.
