NYPD Chief of Patrol Fausto Pichardo filed for retirement Tuesday, the NYPD tells News 12.
The announcement comes less than a year after Pichardo was promoted to the position. He was promoted back in January.
The NYPD said his retirement ends "an accomplished more than two-decade long career in the New York City Police Department."
"[He] was the first Chief of Patrol of Dominican heritage in NYPD history and has worked tirelessly in recent months to guide the men and women in uniform through a series of challenging issues that have strained the city and the agency," the statement said.
NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins also address Pichardo's decision.
“Chief Pichardo was an asset to the NYPD. Sadly, Mayor DeBlasio does not and has never valued the talent that exist in the NYPD. Pichardo’s resignation is a loss to the NYPD, the City of New York and the overall Hispanic community," Mullins said in a statement to News 12.
