Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD's top leaders said Wednesday that shootings and murders down for New York City last year, but officer assaults were up.

 

Adams and Caban cited statistics showing that crime is on the decline, with heads of the NYPD celebrating that these numbers are the case with some of the lowest staffing in years. 

 

NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban said, "16 fewer people shot in 2023 compared to the previous year, which again, represents the fourth-lowest number of shooting victims in the past 31 years."

 

Police said assaults on NYPD officers have skyrocketed. They said it's likely because officers making more felony arrests are in contact with more potentially violent offenders.
