State leaders and the Detectives’ Endowment Association held a press conference Wednesday to demand action after new FBI data shows a 50% surge in assaults on police nationwide.
Attendees urged lawmakers to strengthen protections against those who “deliberately crowd, threaten and interfere with officers on the job.”
The union says the bill would make it a misdemeanor to ignore a 15-foot safety buffer after a verbal warning.
The union says they need the space to make arrests safely and secure dangerous scenes.
Interference in those situations can escalate matters and put both officers and citizens at great risk, officials say.
Figures from the FBI showed officer assaults climb from 60,105 in 2020 to 90,178 in 2025.
