Police say a man who dragged an NYPD officer while trying to flee in a stolen car in 2017 was arrested again on Sunday while out on parole.

According to police, Justin Murrell was caught and arrested Sunday for driving another stolen vehicle recklessly. He was taken to this precinct and handed multiple charges.

This arrest comes after Murrell was sentenced in 2019 for dragging Detective Dalsh Veve four years ago, leaving him with permanent injuries. Murrell served more than two years before he was released.

Murrell, now 19 years old, was out on parole when police say around 1:20 a.m., officers saw him run a red light on Hinsdale Street and New Lots Avenue. That car was a 2021 red Honda, which was seen beat up outside the precinct.

As police were trying to get Murrell, they say he crashed into some parked cars and tried to run away before he was arrested.

Officers say Murrell is now facing charges for grand larceny of an automobile, criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment and disobeying a traffic control device.

Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch said in a statement in part: "...We had a judge and elected officials who thought he should be given yet another chance and put right back on the street. That extra chance could have gotten a police officer or innocent New Yorker killed."

Police also say three other people were in the car with Murrell, but there is no word on their role in this incident.
