An NYPD detective was shot in Crown Heights Sunday morning, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Surveillance video captured by News 12 shows the suspected gunman waving a firearm in the air. The video also shows a member of the NYPD jumping into action from a nearby parked vehicle.

Tisch says Det. Robert Karroll, who works in the NYPD Sex Offender Monitoring Unit, was shot in the back of his bulletproof vest and now has bruising on his back. He is expected to make a full recovery at Kings County Hospital.

An 18-year-old man is in custody in connection with the shooting.

Tisch said the shooting started when an 18‑year‑old approached the unmarked NYPD vehicle holding a gun.

As officers got out of their vehicle in an attempt to disarm the man, he opened fire, Tisch said.

The vehicle had bullet holes in the front and rear windshields and on the passenger side from the incident.

Three officers returned fire, but the 18-year-old was not struck.

A second officer suffered bruising to his face and shoulder during the incident.

The man ran away from the officers, leading to an on-foot chase that ended at Rogers Avenue and Union Street.

Tisch said he resisted arrest, refused to be handcuffed and was ultimately subdued with a Taser before being taken into custody.

Police recovered a Carbine 9mm gun at the scene.

Both officers were in the neighborhood as part of the NYPD’s July 4th violence‑reduction plan. They had been reassigned to the area after working the Sail 250 event in lower Manhattan on Saturday.

This shooting comes exactly nine years after Bronx Detective Miosotis Familia was assassinated while sitting in her NYPD vehicle.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted on social media about the incident, sharing that he visited the detective in the hospital on Sunday morning.

"I visited Detective Carroll at the hospital today, and I’m grateful his bulletproof vest protected him from more serious injury. I’m keeping him and his loved ones in my thoughts as he recovers," Mamdani stated.
