NYPD officers soon be required to document every single stop that they make. Well, that decision now once again lays in the hands of the city council. They're expected to take a final vote this afternoon regarding the how many stops Act News? Twelve's Faith Graham. She joins us now from outside Brooklyn Borough Hall. So Faith, what is in store today? Good morning, Chris and Asia. The how many stops that would require and my PD officers to document every interaction they have with the public writing down things like their age, gender and race. Now this bill passed through the city council back in December. Mayor Eric Adams though was quick to veto it as a former law enforcement officer, but really what this all boils down to is public safety. Those in support of the bill say it would promote public safety and make the public feel more comfortable with the NYPD. Those in opposition though, say it would hinder it having officers spending more time in their patrol cars filling out paperwork rather than policing. Now ahead of the vote, one of the co sponsors of the bill, public advocate Human Money, Williams, he held a rally right here outside of Brooklyn Borough Hall yesterday, outlining why he thinks this bill should pass saying it is crucial. And this morning, Brooklyn council members and community groups are holding a rally outside City Hall to do the same. All of this is the result of Mayor Eric Adams vetoing the council's vote saying the bill would actually hinder public safety to prove his point. The mayor invited members of the city council to ride along with the NYPD this past weekend to see what a typical shift looks like and just how this bill would put more on their plate. If it passes, they will be required to document all kinds of things like age, gender and race along with why the stop was made. Those in favor say it would boost transparency and it's essential so that uh New Yorkers have a better idea of how policing is being done and this kind of transparency is essential for building better trust between the community and the NYPD. Again, those on the other side of the aisle say which is hurt public safety as officers would be spending more time in their patrol cars. Now, the city council is expected to vote this afternoon on whether or not they will be overriding the mayor's veto in downtown Brooklyn Faith Graham News 12.
