NYPD: Overall crime stats shot up 22% in 2022

The latest crime numbers for New York City in 2022 are out and city leaders are chiming in on what they plan to do in response.
The report shows crimes jumped 22% last year compared to the previous year. Murders were down 11%.
The city is showing some optimism in the later part of the year with overall crimes being down slightly in the fourth quarter compared to the same period in 2021. In the month of December, major crimes, including murders, were down 26% compared to December 2021. Grand larceny dropped 25% while rape, burglaries and robberies were also down compared to December 2021.
City and state officials met for a public safety summit organized by Reverend Al Sharpton after the report released. They vowed to work together to tackle the root of the problems that are causing the uptick in crime.
