A knife-wielding was shot by police officers in a Brownsville NYCHA apartment and later died Tuesday in what the NYPD is calling a domestic dispute.
NYPD Chief of Housing Charles McEvoy said that police received a 911 call from a female that stated that the father of her children was en route to her home at the Glenmore Housing Development and was upset that another man was watching their children.
Police were told that the man was known for carrying weapons, including machetes and hammers.
Two uniformed officers were dispatched from Police Service Area 2. When they arrived at the apartment, the 25-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was already inside.
McEvoy says the man then moved toward the officer while brandishing a knife. A taser was deployed but ineffective. He says the second officer then opened fire, striking the man twice in the chest.
The man was later pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.
McEvoy says the officers’ body camera were operational during the incident.
