NYPD: 25-year-old knife-wielding man shot by police at Brownsville NYCHA building dies at hospital

A knife-wielding man was shot by police officers in a Brownsville NYCHA apartment and later died Tuesday in what the NYPD is calling a domestic dispute.
NYPD Chief of Housing Charles McEvoy said that police received a 911 call from a female before 3 this afternoon that stated that the father of the toddlers was en route to her home at the Glenmore Housing Development and was upset that another man was watching their children.
Police were told that the man was known for carrying weapons, including machetes and hammers.
“She reported that he was angry because another man had been watching their children, and she stated that he believed he was on his way to kill her," said Chief McEvoy.
Two uniformed officers were dispatched from Police Service Area 2. When they arrived at the apartment, they say the woman led them up to the apartment where the 25-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was already inside.
McEvoy says the man then moved toward the officer while brandishing a knife. A taser was deployed but ineffective. He says the second officer then opened fire, striking the man twice in the chest.
The man was later pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.
The incident is thethird police-involved shooting across the city in the past two weeks.
News 12 spoke with Brownsville residents like Dwight Hays who says he's not surprised.
“It’s a shame, but at some point you become immune to it because it happens all time," said Hays.
Police say the woman, children and officers wereuninjured.
McEvoy says the officers’ body camera were operational during the incident.
