The New York City Police Department has reported that shootings are up 32% in all of New York City in comparison to last year.
The report says the victims of these incidents range in age - from infants to adults. In response, Mayor Eric Adams announced his "blueprint to end gun violence" back on Jan. 24.
His plan aims to take illegal guns off the streets and to provide resources to combat the surge, such as sending public safety teams into high-crime areas. On Thursday, he and Gov. Kathy Hochul were joined by President Joe Biden who vowed to provide more federal funding to police officers and violence prevention programs.
The NYPD says that the number of homicides has dropped in the city, but car-related thefts have increased by over 90%.
