The NYPD hosted an event on Tuesday to unveil a new program hoping to empower young people.

The event was an effort to build and improve relations between communities and police.

At the event, law enforcement officials announced the five award winners for the #mybrooklynstory contest they launched back in November, where residents submitted multimedia entries telling stories from their neighborhoods.
 
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Police Commissioner James O’Neill launched a new NYPD strategic communications fellowship program which will arm young people with skills in social media, including video production, graphic design, photograph, speech writing nd more.

“They will use the skills to develop their own stories and help cops strengthen the bonds between police and all the communities that we serve,” said O’Neill

Law enforcement officials said relations between communities and police should be more than dialing 911, and instead should be about having a one-on-one relationship with the police officers in their precinct.
