The NYPD will implement new guidelines limiting vehicle pursuits to serious felonies and violent misdemeanors starting Feb. 1.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tish says the updated policy aims to reduce risks for officers and the public.
"The NYPD’s enforcement efforts must never put the public or the police at undue risk, and pursuits for violations and low-level crimes can be both potentially dangerous and unnecessary," she said.
The NYPD says in 2024, 25% of the city’s 2,278 pursuits resulted in collisions or injuries, many of which would no longer be authorized under the new rules.
Officials say the changes prioritize safety while maintaining effective crime enforcement.
