Ocean Parkway is undergoing a multimillion-dollar makeover to improve safety along its nearly 5-mile stretch.

The Department of State has invested $8.5 million to make it safer for both pedestrians and bike riders after the Tri-State Transportation Campaign had recently listed it as the most dangerous street for pedestrians.

The plan calls for eliminating left turns from nine service roads, adding traffic signals to others, adding more pedestrian countdown clocks and reconstructing pedestrian ramps.

Not everyone is sure that the improvements will be enough.

"I think we need some police just posted here that can document what goes on and also to enforce the rules," said William Torres, of Kensington.

 

The construction along Ocean Parkway began this week and it is expected to completed by next fall.
