An off-duty Mount Vernon police officer was killed Thursday morning in a fiery accident that shut down a portion of I-95.
According to authorities, 29-year-old Reginald Velez, of The Bronx, was driving in the wrong direction on the northbound highway when he crashed into a tractor-trailer at around 2:30 a.m.
The expressway was closed for nearly three hours as officials worked to put out a car fire and remove Velez from his vehicle.
