Officials say a 14-year-old girl who had just given birth walked into a Jersey City restaurant and handed the newborn to a customer, and then fled the scene.
The incident happened Wednesday around 4 p.m. at El Patron on the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Linden Avenue.
The girl can be seen on surveillance footage walking into the restaurant. Police say she was looking for help.
She was later found by officers and hospitalized. The baby was taken to a hospital. As of last night, both were OK, and no charges were filed.
New Jersey has a Safe Haven Law, which allows anyone to give up a newborn baby at an emergency room, police, fire, or EMS station with no questions asked.
The New Jersey Department of Children and Families will ensure that the infant is placed with a foster or pre-adoptive home.
