A firefighter suffered minor burns during a fire that displaced over a dozen people in Hempstead, officials say.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. Saturday when fire crews responded to a house on Wellesley Street.
Fire crews say the flames started on the third floor and 15 people, including children, were forced out of the home.
A firefighter received minor burns while responding to the fire, according to Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office Assistant Chief James Hickman.
“The one firefighter perhaps got burned while trying to get up the stairs,” Hickman says. “The last set of stairs going up to what I’ll describe as an ‘attic space’ is very narrow and very steep, difficult conditions to contend with.
The Red Cross is working to help people displaced by the fire.
