More kids from Brooklyn may be inspired to swim after native Lia Neal won the bronze medal in the women's four-by-100 meter freestyle last week.
However, parents should take note that almost 3,500 people die from accidental drownings each year in the U.S. Cullen Jones, another Olympian competing in the games this year, almost drowned at a water park at 5 years old, and now teaches others how to be safe in the water.
When he's not competing, Jones teaches children to swim as part of the "Make A Splash" program, which teaches kids how to swim safely.
"This sport has given me a lot," he says. "I really want to make sure that I give back to it and make sure that I can shine the path to another kid."
