City Island is a place where visitors come to eat, fish and enjoy the sights, but what many don't know is that it is almost entirely self contained.
With just about 450 residents, City Island runs approximately a mile and a half long and half a mile wide with only one way on and off. The main strip, City Island Avenue, is lined with restaurants ranging from seafood to Latin to fast food. And there is only one post office, firehouse and library.
Residents say there is a great sense of community and everyone knows everyone. They say the island is like a getaway place, a nice place to come home and relax. In addition, residents say the reason those who live on City Island stay and why those who visit keep coming back is because there is no other place like it in the Bronx.
