The iconic musical “Into the Woods” has made the magical journey
back to Broadway.
The production opened Sunday at the St. James Theatre, featuring
a star-studded cast that includes Sara Bareilles, Phillipa Soo, Gavin Creel and
Joshua Henry.
Originally performed on Broadway
in 1987, the musical's characters are drawn from fairy tales by the Brothers
Grimm.
"When you're watching fairy tales, there's
something childlike that immerses, that you get immersed in, that is also very
cathartic," says Bareilles, who plays the Baker's wife.
“Into the
Woods” is one of the late Stephen Sondheim's most loved works. This production
was first staged at New York City Center Encores last spring before
transferring to Broadway.
"Whenever I make something, especially live theatre, I hope
that people leave watching it having felt some sort of comradery with their
fellow man," says Soo, who plays Cinderella. "There's a level of
empathy we can all gain from watching a piece of live theatre."
Into The Woods is a limited engagement and is scheduled to close on Aug. 21.
