A Williamsburg nonprofit opened its new state-of-the-art music facility Thursday.
National Sawdust is a $16 million performance venue and recording studio.
The building was once a sawdust factory, so organizers decided to stick with the name.
Director Paola Prestini says that in addition to providing a space for up-and-coming artists to perform and record, National Sawdust will focus on marketing, funding and branding.
"It means you can come to talks," Prestini says. "It means we will be mentoring young artists."
The venue plans to host about 500 performances a year.
