A new charter school is opening its doors in Mount Vernon next week.
The Intellectus Preparatory Charter School will be the first such institution to open in the Hudson Valley in 10 years.
The school will welcome sixth- and seventh-grade students beginning Monday, with plans to include those at the high school level in the future.
Founder and CEO Kenyah Miller says she believes "we have a responsibility to not only make sure that we are educating our students, but preparing them socially and emotionally."
Miller says the school will focus on hands-on learning, financial literacy, and mental health counseling.
While a majority of the students are from Mount Vernon, the school is accepting new students from across the state.
