Hundreds gathered along Surf Avenue in Coney Island to be a part of the 42nd annual Mermaid Parade.
Spectators lined the block to watch people sing, dance and celebrate the beginning of the summer. Most were wearing elaborate costumes related to mermaids and sea life.
Parade participants said the day is all about art, freedom of expression, community building and fun. Others took it as an opportunity for activism by holding banners calling for people to recycle, among other environmental messages.
The parade was followed by a party on the beach. News 12’s Lindsay Tanney was there with all the sights and sounds.
