An overnight fire completely destroyed a church on East 23rd Street in Sheepshead Bay.
All that remains is the skeleton of what was once the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Flames destroyed the building just after midnight. It was brought under control by firefighters hours later.
There were no injuries. It is not yet clear what sparked the fire.
Churchgoers had recently been working to repair damage caused by another fire in 2007 in the building’s parish hall.
Members say the church has been in the community since 1896.
