With the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, two organizations in Brooklyn are raising awareness by adding a touch of pink on the streets of their community.
Trees are decorated with pink ribbons across 30 blocks in Park Slope thanks to the Park Slope 5 Avenue Business Improvement District.
The Park Slope 5 Avenue BID and the American Cancer Society of Brooklyn have tied the vibrant bows as a reminder for neighbors to get involved with a good cause.

"I'm hoping people will look at the ribbon and come up to it, and look at what's on the tag," says Mark Caserta, executive director of the Park Slope 5th Avenue BID.

This is the first time the two organizations are tied together in this cause. They also placed cards with information about the upcoming Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The two groups are assembling a team to walk that day and have named themselves “Pink Slope 5th Avenue BID.”

“They hopefully either donate or just join the walk and be a part of it," says Caserta.

They'll be a part of the more than 30,000 people expected to take part in that event.
Joanna Tallantire, the deputy director of the Park Slope 5th Avenue BID, took to the streets to put the ribbons up, stating breast cancer has impacted her personally.

"I did lose a grandmother to breast cancer so that obviously is personal. But being a part of our community and supporting our nonprofits and what they're doing is extremely important to us as an organization and myself," says Tallantire, deputy director of the Park Slope 5th Avenue BID.

They'll be marching to raise awareness in Coney Island on Oct. 20.
