A questionable-looking roof and peeling paint will soon be things of the past at Park Slope's historic F train subway stop.

The 75-year-old art deco station, located at Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. However, straphangers say it's been neglected for years.

In addition to paint over the windows, billboards block sunlight and views of busy Fourth Street. Bricks are crumbling at the station and the roof appears to be in need of repair.

The MTA plans to change the roof, restore the windows, remove the billboards and make other upgrades as part of a $100 million rehabilitation project of the F line all the way to Coney Island. Construction is scheduled to begin in less than two years and all of the work is expected to be completed by 2010.

Subway riders are hoping for another upgrade at the stop: escalators and elevators. The MTA says it has no plans to add either.
