Some Park Slope residents want a plan involving two major roadways put in park.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) wants to convert 7th Avenue into a one-way road between Flatbush and Prospect avenues. The DOT wants to do the same to 6th Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and 23rd Street, but in the opposite direction. Transportation officials say the changes would make turning easier and make travel safer for pedestrians. However, some residents counter the changes would encourage more drivers to take those routes, causing congestion.
A City Council member adds the DOT is trying to facilitate the flow of traffic to and from the future Nets arena, the Barclays Center. A spokesperson for Atlantic Yards developer Forest City Ratner says the developer didn't request the changes.
The DOT maintains the changes won't happen without the community's support.
