New York City Park Commissioner Adrian Benepe and other city officials gathered at Orchard Beach today to celebrate the opening of city beaches for the summer season.
Starting tomorrow, lifeguards will officially go on duty at the beaches. They will stay on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day weekend.
The city's 14 miles of free public beaches are accessible by mass transit.
