A new act is looking to hold reckless drivers who injure or kill pets accountable in New York City.

Local leaders and New Yorkers are working to pass the PAWS (Protecting Animals Walking on the Street) Act. The proposed bill would raise penalties against reckless drivers who kill or injure pets while behind the wheel in the five boroughs.

Advocates of this bill want to increase the penalty from $100 to $500 against drivers who hit a pet and leave the scene.
