Tenants at the Penn Wortman houses sounded off Tuesday as NYCHA teams up with a new developer pushing tenants to sign a new lease that will switch their status from section nine housing to section eight.
In one of the first public meetings since the announcement was made, tenants vented frustration saying they are being told they have no choice in the matter.
NYCHA says it's a done deal, but advocates say the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) hasn't approved the plan yet.
Tenants add they're being misled by fear and are scared they could lose their homes if they sign a new lease with a new developer.
NYCHA released a statement saying on the project called PACT, "PACT is not privatization and not a path toward it. NYCHA continues to own the land and buildings, and all apartments are subsidized through HUD."
They say they've been reaching out to tenants since early 2020.
