The first phase of renovations at Bushwick?s Washington Irving Square Park is complete. On Tuesday, students, neighbors and city leaders were all on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Park patrons will now enjoy a water fountain, a redesigned playground and new landscaping. Two years ago, the park's over-stuffed trash cans and crime qualified it as one of the city's worst. Now, New York City Park Commissioner Adrian Benepe says the park could bring a real estate boom to the area. Officials say phase two is expected to start at the end of the summer. It includes the planting of fruit trees and an outdoor performance space. Parks officials say both phases of the renovations will cost more than $2.8 million.
