A group of volunteers are choosing to use their green thumbs to make a difference in their community by distributing fresh fruits and vegetables to residents of NYCHA’s Pink Houses.
The Pink Houses Community Garden is run by volunteers through New York Cares who hand out bags of fresh vegetables and fruits.
Teenagers are also able to get summer jobs with the community garden where they are taught how to grow and take care of the organic crops from start to end.
Ivi Lewis, one of the volunteers at the garden, has been helping for three years and says the outreach has been tremendous.
“A place like this being in the middle of Pink Houses is where people can get exposed to different foods, learn different ways to cook, and learn different ways to get different nutrients in your body without always having to eat a burger just to get by,” says Lewis.
Every Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m, volunteers are out in the garden handing out different fruits and vegetables to residents.
