For the first time since the Vietnam War, the military is going to recruit immigrants by offering them U.S. citizenship as an incentive.

The pilot program will be launched in New York beginning with a few hundred enlistees in its first year.

The army will offer immigrants living in the U.S. on a temporary basis citizenship after they've been enlisted for at least six months. The army is in need of professionals, like doctors and nurses, and is also targeting those immigrants who speak different languages, like Arabic and Hindi.

Officials say immigrants must have lived in the U.S. for at least two years and possess temporary visas to qualify.
