Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the Interborough Express plan is taking one step closer to becoming a reality.
The long-anticipated rail line aims to cut commute times between Brooklyn and Queens.
The Interborough Express that has been discussed for more than 30 years is now entering its design and engineering phase.
Its goal is to bridge the transit gap between the only two New York City boroughs connected by land but not by a direct train line.
One Brooklyn commuter told News 12 that it's difficult for her because he has to go to Manhattan and then to Queens.
Supporters say the new line would provide a direct, 14-mile route from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to Jackson Heights, Queens. The project would connect 17 subway lines, 50 bus routes and two Long Island Rail Road stations.
“This is about creating connections between communities,” said Gov. Hochul. “It’s about bringing people together.”
The governor said the Interborough Express would reduce congestion.
“All one seamless connection will open up a whole new world of opportunity without adding traffic on our clogged roads,” Hochul said.
Daily commuters could save up to 30 minutes per trip. “That’s an hour back in your life,” Hochul added.
Council Member Susan Zhuang says the benefits extend beyond convenience.
“We want our small businesses to be able to make money,” Zhuang said. “Finally, we have something that can connect us with Queens.”
While the project has no completion timeline yet, transportation leaders say moving into the design and engineering stage is a major milestone.
