Police say a vehicle fatally struck a 10-year-old boy Saturday morning in Midwood, and the driver is now facing charges.
It happened at Seton Place and Foster Avenue around 10:30 a.m.
Police say a preliminary investigation shows that a 29-year-old driver in a Ford SUV was making a left turn onto Foster Avenue when he struck the boy, who was riding a bicycle in the crosswalk.
Crews responded to the scene and found the boy unconscious and unresponsive with severe bodily trauma. He was pronounced dead at Maimonides Medical Center.
Police have identified the boy as Dalerjon Shahobiddinov.
The driver of the SUV, identified as Victor Mejia of Brooklyn, was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a bicyclist, driving without a license and failure to exercise due care.
Friends gathered outside of the boy's home, just steps from where he was struck. They say he was thrown from the bicycle as the vehicle continued to drive down the street with his bike stuck underneath.
It comes just two weeks after a 14-year-old boy was fatally struck by a truck in Queens. More than 20 bicyclists have been killed on city streets this year.
In a statement, Danny Harris, the executive director of Transportation Alternatives, said of the crash, "Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets will continue to fight for safe streets for all New Yorkers because all children should be able to play outside without fear of traffic violence."
